But some of that information is already being used to influence other people in their buying choices.Who hasn’t seen the little addition on Amazon: people who bought this book also bought…This is the thin edge of the wedge, this is just the beginning. This is the information other people have put in to a web site being used to influence you, the visitor. It’s one thing to say that an item might interest you based on what you’ve purchased before, but quite another to have information based on what other people have looked at or bought.And it is also a simple fact of life which cannot be avoided. I may well have been able to block over three thousand tracking attempts during my few hours of surfing, but did they catch all of them? More to the point, aside from Facebook, who is tracking me? The Big Bad Wolf is not an advertising company checking on who has been looking at their banners or pop-ups. The Big Bad Wolf is those tracking companies who gather information, press it all together and then sell it to others. The anonymous, faceless people we have nothing to do with. Are they just marketing companies, or is the government, any government, hiding behind them? Has the CIA found me, or you and decided to track our movements because a web site visited published a photo of someone, or MI6 because there is a comment posted about Kate Middleton’s figure?Enough of the scaremongering. To be honest and there is not a great deal about this gathering of information that’s all that bad. Information has always been gathered, evaluated, passed on and it always will be. Every single time someone goes shopping in the Real World their purchases are recorded: the credit or debit card company; the store; the wholesaler; the manufacturer. No names in most instances, but the information has been gathered. A tin of peas has been purchased, restock the shelves and order a new tin.Are there any benefits to this mass gathering of information?If a product isn’t popular it gets removed from sale. If a whole range of products suddenly go viral, more are produced. If a web site suddenly falls in the ratings, it gets improved or it vanishes. If an advert gets no clicks at all, it needs to be re-evaluated and a new marketing strategy pounded out.The people who are surfing through the Internet are changing its features with each click of their mouse. Their surfing activity is the basis for what follows. A visitor to any web site doesn’t have to press Like to show appreciation, it is enough that the records show they stayed on a site for five minutes, read through an article, even if they didn’t comment or purchase. The visit alone is showing the manufacturers, the advertisers, the service industry where interest lie with the result that they are going to have to tailor what they have on offer to meet our (silent) demands. We, the Internet users, are shaping the future, just by being here. And that can only be a good thing.Even so, nearly eight hundred blocks on Facebook alone in so few hours?I have written so far about the marketing strategies of various Internet web sites, of advertising and the collection of data from individual visits to web sites while surfing through the Internet. Now I wish to take it one step further following an announcement by the German telecommunications company O2, a daughter firm of the Spanish telecommunications company Telefónica.The collection of information through Internet sites, as illustrated above, is simple, cheap and effective. An Internet user surfs to a web site of interest and his or her movements through the web are logged, collected and evaluated by a whole range of different tracking devices, from spy software through cookies, links to social media networks and search engines or analytical tools. But what about the general movements of a person during their daily lives? Is it possible to follow a specific person, or a group of people, as they move through a city? Is it possible to collate the information gained from these movements and come up with an overall picture which might be useful to marketing companies, to advertisers, to the marketplace in general?It is a well known and accepted fact that people who use modern smart phones, as well as older versions, can be tracked. The mobile telephone needs to be in constant contact with a transmission device, a node or similar, so that it is available should the user wish to telephone out or to receive calls from other people. As long as the mobile device is switched on it sends and receives a signal which places it within a certain area, within reach of a communications point to retain this high level of connectivity. A person moving through the streets of Berlin, New York, London, Paris or any other modern city as well as all minor cities, smaller towns, villages and the countryside with a mobile device is constantly followed by these connection signals as long as their device is switched on. Information on their position may, with the right technology, quickly be collected and, in the case of an emergency for example, directed to the appropriate authorities, even without the use of a Global Positioning System (GPS).The German telecommunications company O2 is investigating the possibilities of using this information on the movement of individuals for marketing purposes. Being able to watch the movements of an individual or a group as they travel from one shop to another within a major city, or from one position to another on longer journeys, can give information about where the most interest in a town lies, where the shops and stores have the best pull and even, with finer tuning, how long a person remains in one position, in one shop or store.Not, in and of itself, too much of a problem until you take it to the next step in the process.Couple the information on a person’s movements with further information, such as age and gender, and it is possible to build up a very accurate picture of the movements and interests of a group of people within a certain age group – such as young women aged between 18 and 24. The necessary information is already there, voluntarily given by the customer during the process of buying or renting a mobile telephone. Date of birth, address, gender and, in some cases, income and educational levels are all included in the basic application process for a contract between telecommunications company and customer.Here, because of the sudden lack of anonymity, we come into a gray area as far as data protection is concerned, and a potential earner for the telecommunications industry. Combine the information with actual sales, with positioning in an entertainment area of a city or the main shopping street, and it is possible to build up an individual picture of each and every person using a mobile device at any time of the day or night. Here we are verging on the private sphere, the gathering of information which can be narrowed down to a specific person.What is the difference between an individual person using the Internet and being tracked and an individual using a mobile device?With Internet tracking there may well be several hundred people using a connection point into the Internet, an IP address linked to an Internet Service Provider, at any one time. With mobile device tracking the link is direct to a specific mobile phone, to a specific person who has purchased or rented this device. Information is already available and is constantly being added to each time a person switches their mobile device on. It is only a matter of time before the true potential of this information source is recognized and, data protection laws allowing, becomes common practice.This form of gathering, of tracking is, according to many professional and civil rights organizations, one step too far. As long as the information gathered comes from a large group and cannot be traced back to an individual it is relatively harmless. With the mobile device potential, the move towards a Minority Report style society is far closer than anyone would wish to believe and, in all probability, far closer than anyone is prepared to accept.

Two nationally renowned experts in economic forecasting recently spoke in Atlanta at an annual meeting of the CCIM Institute, a group of recognized experts in commercial and investment real estate from across the nation. The event was attended by members of the group from over thirty states.Rajeev Dhawan, director of the Economic Forecasting Center at Georgia State University, spoke on the local and national economies. Dhawan, who often appears on CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, NBC, CBS and the Bloomberg Report, sees the southeastern states doing much better than the rest of the country. Unfortunately, he says, the economies of California, Arizona, and Nevada are already in a recession and make up 20 percent of the national economy. However, Dhawan sees the current problems as mostly a “crisis of confidence of the American public.”His predictions for job growth for the state of Georgia indicate only around 28,000 new jobs in 2008, but a healthy uptick in 2009 with an additional 70,100 new jobs. The following year should see over 98,000 additional jobs. While much of his predictions are flat for 2008, he predicts a bounce back in the real estate markets in 2009.The second speaker was Stephen Phyrr, senior managing director of Kennedy Wilson and Executive Director of The American Real Estate Society of Austin, Texas. Phyrr has spent much of his career studying the effects of the cyclical economy on the real estate market.While there are certainly some negative signs, Phyrr sees a positive overall forecast for the economy and real estate in general. His conclusions are summed up in six points:1. Overall, the positives outweigh the negatives going forward. The lack of confidence of the American public reflects the media’s emphasis on the “bad news” and creates a biased picture of the real estate environment.2. The financial markets have overreacted to the real credit crunch of 2007, making financing difficult for investors throughout 2008.3. Real estate will fare relatively well over the next three to five years compared to other asset classes.4. Investors will go back to the fundamentals of improving property values by improving property management, and not by using financing as a vehicle to make sense of an investment.5. There will be plenty of financing for real estate, and lenders will look for diversified types of real estate to finance.6. Multi-family property investments will be a beneficiary of the housing finance and homebuilding crisis of 2007.Additionally, Phyrr discussed the importance of understanding real estate cycles. Real estate undergoes up and down cycles. Boom cycles have averaged 10 to 11 years and bust cycles have averaged five to six years over the past 30 years. Our last real estate boom topped out in 2001 and real estate values have been on a decline since then. So, based on the cycle timing and some other positive attributes, we are near or at the bottom of the down cycle and look forward to an upward trend in real estate values.o

There are a lot of firsts in all our lives – first car, first house, first kiss. So, there is no shame in having questions or anxiety the first time you are traveling internationally. It may not even be your first time, but maybe a lot of time has gone by and a lot of changes in travel procedures have occurred. You want to know what to expect so that you are prepared. After all, being prepared just may take a bit of the stress out of the travel process. Here are some tips and recommendations that should alleviate any uncertainties and help you be ready to experience an amazing trip filled only with good memories!1. Purchasing tickets. If you are not going to use a travel professional to assist you with your flights, please make sure your international tickets are purchased in your name as listed on your passport. If you don’t have a passport yet, please purchase the tickets in your full name as listed on your birth certificate. Honeymooning? The ticket as well as passport will be in the maiden (current) name of the bride-to-be. Don’t worry, if you request a name change within one year of issuance, the new bride can get her passport name changed after she gets home from the honeymoon. Guys, remember to add any “Jr., II” if applicable.2. Passport book vs. Passport Card! If you have been to the Travel.State.gov site and investigated passports and still aren’t sure which one you should get, you’re not alone. Here is a simple answer: if you are traveling via an airplane and landing in another country, a passport book is required. If you are taking a cruise that ports out of a U.S. city, a passport card or Enhanced license (only offered in Michigan, New York, Vermont & Washington) will suffice, but a passport book is recommended. Why? Well, if you happen to get ill or have a family emergency that requires you to “abandon ship” and fly home from St. Lucia, a passport book will be required to enter the U.S.A. via air.3. Security and carry-on packing rules. There is a lot of good information on what is allowed in your carry-on from the TSA. All liquids should be 3.4 oz or less and in a quart sized Ziploc bag. In regards to security, once you check in with your airline, you will go through a line that requires a passport check to ensure it is real. Once you go through that, you will be in line to go through the screening process. Take off your shoes, your belt, your coat or light sweater, empty your pockets, put all items in a bin (or two), place your carry-on suitcase (if you have one) on the belt and wait for them to signal you through. Sometimes you will randomly be chosen to do a full body screen where you put your hands up over your head with your feet separated and they do a scan. This is random…don’t worry!4. Packing. I recommend keeping your valuables on you – cameras, jewelry, medications etc. If you take a medication that is a matter of life or death, please take more with you than you need and have a new prescription written up as a back-up. You can never be too safe. Don’t take jewelry that you can’t live without! Make sure you find out what the dress code requirements are for restaurants of your resort (if applicable). For example, some will require dress pants and close-toed shoes for men. Pack two days of essentials in your carry-on luggage if you have a connecting flight.5. Customs & Immigration. On your flight to your final destination, you will be given a form to fill out. Generally, the flight attendants will make an announcement and give some pointers or tips on how to fill them out (depending on where you are going). The basic information you will need is your name, passport number, flight numbers, dates of travel, reason for travel and where you are staying. It will request the address of where you are staying…it is okay to just put the name of your hotel as you most likely won’t have the address.6. At the airport in your vacation destination! Almost there…just a few more steps and you’ll officially be on your vacation! Once you arrive in the country you are visiting, you will be required to go through the immigration line. Here you will show your passports and the form you filled out on the airplane. Once your passport is stamped (woo-hoo!), you will head to the luggage area, get your luggage and then head to Customs. This is generally really simple in most airports and may require a screening of the luggage or random search and then you’re off!7. Heading back home! Can’t resist the duty free liquor at the airport? Let’s face it, a good bottle of rum is like a household staple. So, you can’t help buying Appleton Rum at $12 a bottle and you know several friends and family who would appreciate it as well. As long as you are 21 or older, you can purchase 1 liter of duty free liquor. So, once you purchase this at your vacation destination airport, you will carry it on your flight. If you have a non-stop flight, then you are good to go. If you have a connecting flight, then after you are admitted back in through the U.S. Immigration screening, you will proceed to get your luggage. Before going through Customs with your luggage, you will need to securely place your newly purchased liquor in your checked bag. This is because once you clear Customs, you will then go through another security screening where you have to comply to the TSA requirements for carry-ons. Remember: liquids must be 3.4 oz or less and in one quart sized Ziploc bag.8. Customs & Immigration coming back to the U.S.A. If you read #7 then you are semi-prepared for this. On your flight back to the United States, you will fill out the Customs and Immigration form. Upon arrival in the U.S. you will first go through Immigration for admittance back into the good ole USA. Following that, you will get your luggage from baggage claim and proceed to the Customs line. This is generally quite simple as well. P.S. The form is very easy and much like the form described in point #5. Please do not feel that you have to write down ever souvenir you purchased as a separate item. So your list might have something like coffee, souvenirs, liquor or food listed. After Customs, you will go through another screening like in #3…shoes off, pockets emptied etc. As a side note, for those of you purchasing your own flights, make sure you have enough time to go through Customs & Immigration plus make your connecting flight! A good rule of thumb is 1.5 hours or more. Once you clear Customs, follow the signs and drop your luggage back off to be re-checked on your next flight out. A Host Agency is a licensed, bonded travel agency which allows travel agents or outside travel agents to book travel using their company name. There is a split in the commission, as the host agency is the legal business which allows you to book travel for your clients. Most host agencies charge a fee, and an annual fee, but not all. Fees for joining a Hosting Agency can range from zero dollars, up to $500.Another option is to contact your local travel agency and let them know you want to work as an outside agent. Be prepared to explain what types of travel you want to offer and to what type of groups you want to specialize in. The agency owner, or manager, will provide you with the commission structure, if any, policies and procedures. Some travel agencies only offer free travel to group leaders, while others offer, free travel, and commissions.When first starting out, it is almost always better to join a group in process, or, create a fun, 2 day trip, to get experience. My own experience included learning the procedure for a particular cruise ship. For about 5 years, every time a Princess Cruise ship docked in San Francisco, I thought I should further my travel education and be aboard ship when it cruise under the Golden Gate Bridge and out to sea. My efforts landed me in the Captain’s Circle and qualified me as a Platinum Cruise Member.It is easy to find clients. Below is a list of ways to market your travel events.1. Travel sells itself, especially, if the destination and price is of interest. You can provide your clients with a bottle of fine wine aboard ship.Remember to ask for a deposit. Stay focused, your job is to provide information and collect checks. Ask friends to sponsor a travel party. The more parties you have, the more people you sign up. It’s that simple!3. Make announcements at your church and your organization. Include the information in the church bulletin or your organization’s newsletter, as many times as possible.4. Have flyers made up, but not before you have business cards printed, with your name, contact numbers, email address, name of travel event, dates and starting cost.5. Distribute flyers, at public places or public events.6. Use classified ads, online and offline to promote your travel event.7. Pass out your cards, everywhere you go. Doctor’s office, cleaners, grocery store, beauty shop, stores where you shop, your children’s school, your favorite neighborhood bar, and eating establishments.Paper work is extremely important and without it, nothing happens. Paper work must be completed correctly and forwarded to the host agency or travel agency in a timely manner. Failure to do so could result in an ugly situation, which could escalate into a legal battle.Checks should be made out to the host agency or the travel agency. Even if the travel agency says its OK for your clients to make the check out to you, don’t do it. Get you commissions from the host agency, unless you have a Seller of Travel license. One you turn in your deposits and payments, the host agency or travel agency, will provide you with your commissions, based on your agreement.Outside travel agents usually work under an Independent Contractor Agreement and are issued a 1099-MISC at the end of the year.
